HH2E initiates purchase of 120MW of electrolyzer capacity from Nel.

Oslo/Berlin, 06.01.2023

  • It will be the largest order of electrolyzer capacity for green hydrogen production in Germany to date
  • HH2E has already announced the first of several industrial-scale plants it has planned to reach 4 GW of installed capacity in Germany by 2030. The HH2E-Werk Lubmin is scheduled to start producing green hydrogen in the second half of 2025.
  • HH2E and Nel plan to cooperate further to help accelerate the development of the green hydrogen sector in Germany

Today, both companies signed the contract for the FEED study, which precedes the final purchase contract. In total, the expected order magnitude is more than 30 million euros, which will only be made binding with the signing of the final purchase contract, expected to take place in the first half of 2023.

Alexander Voigt, Co-founder and board member of HH2E stated, “Our original plan to establish 4 GW of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 in Germany is being implemented at a rapid pace and well within our reach.”

Alexander added, “One of the prerequisites for reaching our growth ambitions is the availability of high-quality electrolysers in Europe, such as the ones that Nel will supply. We are convinced that Nel has the capabilities, technology, and experience to de-risk our projects and execute on schedule”.

Håkon Volldal, CEO of Nel, says, ”These projects are important for the energy transition in Germany and Europe, and we are excited to support HH2E in their efforts to create a greener society”.

The first project announced by HH2E is in Lubmin / Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the German Baltic coast, one of the largest green hydrogen production plants in Europe announced to date. The renewable power used to produce the green hydrogen will be sourced from additional offshore as well as onshore units. The Lubmin plant will have a capacity to produce around 6,000 tonnes (over 200,000 MWh) of green hydrogen per year by 2025. A second-stage expansion is planned to increase capacity to over 1 GW, which will produce more than 60,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and help to avoid more than 800,000 tonnes of direct CO2 emissions annually.

Construction of the first phase of the plant in Lubmin is to begin this year, with commissioning planned for 2025. Commissioning of the second stage is scheduled for 2030.

The technology mix developed by HH2E for the green power plant in Lubmin is another step towards 100% renewable energy, for all sectors and around the clock. The volatility of renewable energy production is solved by combining an alkaline electrolyser with a high-capacity battery, which enables constant production of green hydrogen without a permanent supply of renewable power.

Andreas Schierenbeck, co-founder and Board Member of HH2E declared, “to be successful in the green energy race, Europe needs to expand renewable power generation, develop and retain critical equipment manufacturing, and accelerate the implementation of green hydrogen production projects.”

Andreas added, “China and the USA, other major economies of the world, have understood this situation and declared their aim to win the renewable energy race. By expanding green energy initiatives across Europe, we can not only ensure Europe’s energy sovereignty but making our continent the largest green energy superpower in the world, something that has never happened before in history.”

About HH2E

HH2E is a new green energy company in Germany founded to bring about immediate change. Its technology mix can convert a variable input of solar or wind energy into a constant flow of competitively priced green hydrogen, heat and carbon-free electricity to power local industries and communities. It recently agreed a financing deal with two institutional investors to develop a further 5 sites in Germany.
